एक जाति जिसके अंतर्गत भूफोड़, ढिंगरी, कुकुरमुत्ता, गगनधूल
आदि हैं ।
विशेष—इस जाति के पौधों में हरे कोशाणु नहीं होते, जिनके
द्वारा और पौधे मिट्टी आदि निरवयव द्रव्यों को अपने शरीर के
धातु रूप में परिवर्तित कर सकते हैं । इसी से खुमी जाती के
पौधे, सफेद या मटमैले होते हैं और अपना आहार दूसरे पौधों
या जंतुओं के जीवित या मृत शरीर से प्राप्त करते हैं । बरसात
में भींगी, सड़ी लकड़ियों पर एक प्रकार की गोल और छोटी
खुमी निकलती है, जिसे 'कठफूल' कहते हैं । यह प्रायः विषैली
होती है । खुमी के शरीरकोश की बनावट और पौधों की सी
नहीं होती । इसके कोशण सूत की तरह लंबे लंबे होते हैं;
पर किसी किसी खुमी के कोशणु गोल भी होते हैं । खुमी के
दो मुख्य भेद हैं—एक वह जो दूसरे जीवित पौधों के रस से
पलती हैं; और दूसरी वह जो सड़े गले या मृत शरीर से
आहारसंग्रह करती हैं । पहले प्रकार की खुमी गेरुई आदि के रूप में अनाज के पौधों में देखी जाती है । दूसरे प्रकार की
खुमी भूँफोड़ कठफूल, कुकुरमुत्ता आदि हैं । खुमी के अधिकांश
पौधे अंगुल डेढ़ अंगुल से लेकर आठ आठ, दस दस अंगुल तक के दिखाई पड़ते हैं । ये छूने में कोमल और छाते के आकार के होते हैं । छतरी, की बनावट पर्तदार होती है । खुमी के
कई भेद गूदेदार और खाने लायक होते हैं । जैसे, भूँफोड़,
ढिंगरी (पंजाब) आदि । कई दुर्गंधयुक्त और विषैले होते हैं ।
जैसे,—कुकुरमुत्ता, कठफूल आदि । वैंद्यक में खुमी विषैली
और धर्मशास्त्र में अभक्ष्य मानी गई हैं । खाने योग्य खुमी
(भूँफोड़) खूब गुदेदार और सफेद होती है । उसके डंठल में
गोल गोल छल्ले से पड़े रहते हैं, और उसमें किसी प्रकार की
गंध नहीं होती । खुमी बरसात में बहुत उपजती है ।
