पानी निकालने के लिए पृथ्वी
में खोदा हुआ एक गहरा गड्ढा । कूप ।
विशेष — यह भीतर पानी की तह तक चला जाता है । इसके
किनारे को लोग ईट या पत्थर से बाँधते हैं । इसके घेरे को जो
पहले खोदा जाता है, भगाड़ या ढाल कहते । भगाड़ खोदे
जाने पर उसमें लकड़ी के पहिए के आकार का चक्र रखते हैं
जिसे निवार या जमवट कहते हैं । इसी निवार के ऊपर ईटों की जोड़ी होती है जिसे कोठी करते हैं । किसी किसी कोठी
में दो निवार लगाए जाते हैं । दूसरा निवार पहले निवार के
पाँच छ हाथ ऊपर रहता है और दोनों के बीच में पतली
लकड़ियों की पटरियाँ लगाई जातीं हैं जिन्हे कैंची कहते हैं ।
कोठी तैयार हो जाने पर उसके बीच को मिट्टी निकाली जाती
है जिससे कोठी नीचे धँसती जाती है और कुआँ गहरा होता
जाता है । इस क्रिया को कोठी गलाना कहते हैं । इस प्रकार
कई बार कोठी गलाने पर भीतर पानी का स्त्रोत मिलता हैं ।
पतले स्त्रोत की 'सोती' और मोटे स्त्रोत को 'मूसला' कहते हैं ।
कुएँ के ऊपर मुँह पर जो चबूतरा बनाया जाता हैं, वह 'जगत'
कहलाता है कुएँ के मुँह पर के चौकठे को 'जाल' कहते हैं ।
