दिया जाता है । तीसरे वर्ष इसके ऊपर से छाजन हटा ली
जाती है; और छठे वर्ष से फूल आने लगता है । बारहवें वर्ष
पौधा खूब खिलता है; और बीस पचीस वर्ष तक फूलता रहता
है । इसके बाद फूल कम आने लगते हैं । कलियाँ पहले हरी
रहती है; फिर पीली और अंत को गुलाबी रंग की होती हैं ।
वही उनके तोड़ने का समय है । ये कलियाँ या तो बँधी हुई
चुन ली जाती हैं अथवा लकड़ियों से पीटकर नीचे गिरा दी
जाती हैं, और फिर उनको इकट्ठा करके सुखा लिया जाता है ।
यही लौंग है जो बाजारों में बिकता है । कोई कोई कलियाँ
जो पेड़ों में रह जाती हैं, बढ़कर फूल जाती हैं और फूल झड़
जाने पर नीचे का भाग फूलकर छोटा सी घुंडी के आकार का
हो जाता है, जिसमें एक या दो दाने होते हैं । यही घुंडी
बोने के काम में आती है । लौंग की कलम भी उसकी डाली
को मिट्टी में दबाने से तैयार की जाती है । डेढ़ दो महीने में
उसमें जड़े निकल आती हैं । इस प्रकार की कलम जल्दी फूलने
लगती हैं । वैद्यक में इस का स्वाद बरारा कड़ु्आ, गुण शीतल,
दीपन, पाचन, रूत्तिकारक कफ-पित्त-नाशक, प्यास और वमन
को मिटानेवाला, आँखों के लिये हितकर और शूल, खाँसी,
श्वास, हिचकी और क्षय रोग का नाशक माना गया है ।
लौंग से भवके द्वारा एक प्रकार का तेल निकलता है । उसका
व्यवहार सभी देशी और विदेशी औषधी में होता है । वैद्यक
मे इसके तेल का वातनाशक, अग्निदीपक, कफनाशक और
गर्भिणी के वमन को दूर करनेवाला लिखा है । दाँत की पीड़ा
में जब दू पेत्त कृमि हो जायँ, इसको लगाना विशेष लाभदायक
होता है । लौंग का प्रयोग विशेषकर मसाले में होता है ।
