स्थान जस मुलतान (मल्लस्यान) मालव, मालभूमि आदि
में मल्ल शब्दविकृत रुप में मिलता है । त्रिपिटक सं कुशनगर
में मल्लों के राज्य का होना पाया जाता है । मनुस्मृति में
मल्लों को लिछिबी (लिच्छाव) आदि के साथ संस्काच्युत
या व्रात्य क्षात्रय लिखा है । पर मल्ल आदि क्षत्रिय जातियाँ
बोद्ध मतावलंबी हो गई थी । इसका उल्लख स्थान स्थान पर
त्रिपटक में मिलता है जिससे ब्राह्मणी के अधिकार से उनका
निकल जाना और ब्रात्य होना ठीक जान पड़ता है और
कदाचित् इललिये स्मृतियों मे या व्रात्य कह गए है ।
