विशेष— वैदिक शब्दो के निधंटु की जो व्याख्या यास्क मुनि ने की है उसे निरूक्त कहते हैं । इसमें वैदिक शब्दों के अर्थों का
निर्णय किया गया है । वेद के शब्दों का अर्थ प्रकट करनेवाला
प्राचीन आर्ष ग्रंथ यही है । यद्यपि यास्क ने शाकपूर्णि और
स्थौलष्ठीवी आदि अपने से पहले के निरुक्तकारो का उल्लेख
किया है, तथापि उनके ग्रंथ अब प्राप्त नहीं है । सायणाचार्य के अनुसार जिसमें एक शब्द के कई अर्थ या पर्याय कहे गए हों
वह निरूक्त है । काशिका वृत्ति के अनुसार निरूक्त पाँच प्रकार
का होता है— वर्णागम (अक्षर बढ़ाना) वर्णविपर्यय
(अक्षरों को आगे पीछे करना), वर्णाधिकार (अक्षरों को
वदलना), नाश (अक्षरों को छोड़ना) और धातु के किसी
एक अर्थ को सिद्ब करना ।
निरुक्त के बारह अध्याय है । प्रथम में व्याकरण और शब्दशास्त्र
पर सुक्ष्म विचार हैं । इतने प्राचीन काल में शब्दशास्त्र पर
ऐसा गूढ़ विचार और कहीं नहीं देखा जाता । शब्दशास्त्र पर
/?/ मन प्रचलित थे इसका पता यास्क के निरूक्त से लगता है ।
कुछ लोगों का मत था कि सब शब्द धातुमूलक हैं और धातु
क्रियापद मात्र हैं जिनमें प्रत्ययादि लगाकर भिन्न शब्द बनते
हैँ । यास्क ने इसी मत का खंडन किया है । इस मत के
विरोधियों का कहना था कि कुछ शब्द धातुरुप क्रियापदों से
बनते है पर सब नहीं, क्योंकि यदि 'अंश' से अश्व माना जाय
तो प्रत्य़ेक चलने या आगे बढ़नेवाला पदार्थ अश्व कहलाएगा ।
यास्क मुनि ने इसके उत्तर में कहा है कि जब एक क्रिया से
एक पदार्थ का नाम पड़ जाता है तब वही क्रिया करनेवाले
और पदार्थ को वह नाम नहीं दिया जाता । दूसरे पक्ष का
एक और विरोध यह था कि यदि नाम इसी प्रकार दिए गए
है तो किसी पदार्थ में जितने में जितने गुण हों उतने ही उसका नाम भी
होने चाहीए । यास्क इसपर कहते है कि एक पदार्थ किसी
एक गुण या कर्म से एक नाम को धारण करता है । इसी
प्रकार और भी समझिए ।
दूसरे और तीसरे अध्याय में तीन निधंटुओं के शब्दों के अर्थ प्रायः
व्यख्या सहित है । चौथे से छठें अध्याय तक चौथे निघंटु की
व्याख्या है । सातवें से बारहवें तक पाँचवें निघंटु के वैदिक
देवताओं की व्याख्या है ।
