१. वेद का मार्ग

विशेष— बौद्धों और जैनों के लिये प्राय: इस शब्द का व्यवहार
हुआ है । कौलिक आदि भी इस नाम से पुकारे गए हैं ।
पुराणों में लिखा गया है कि पाषंड लोग अनेक प्रकार के
वेश बनाकर इधर उधर घूमा करते हैं । पद्यपुराण में लिखा
गया है कि 'पाषंडों' का साथ छोड़ना चाहिए और भले लोगों
का साथ सदा करना चाहिए । मनु ने भी लिखा है कि
कितव, जुआरी, नटवृत्तिजीवी, क्रूरचेष्ट और पाषंड इनको
राज्य से निकाल देना चाहिए । ये राज्य में रहकर भलेमानुसों
को कष्ट दिया करते हैं ।
२. झूठा आडंबर खडा करनेवाल । लोगों को ठगने और धोखा
देने के लिये साधुओं का सा रुप रंग बनानेवाला । धर्म-
ध्वजी । ढोंगी आदमी । कपटवेशधारी । ३. संप्रदाय ।
मत । पंथ ।
विशेष— अशोक के शिलालेखों में इस शब्द का व्यवहार इसी
अर्थ में प्रतीत होता है । यह अर्थ प्राचीन जान पड़ता है, पीछे
इस शब्द को बुरे अर्थ में लेने लगे । 'पाषंड' का विशेषण
'पाषंडी' बनता है । इससे इसका संप्रदायवाचक होना
सिद्ध होता है । नए नए संप्रदायों के खडे़ होने पर शुद्ध
वैदिक लोग सांप्रदायिकों को तुच्छ दृष्टि से देखते थे ।
