१. शरीर में थैले के आकार
का वह भाग जिसमें पहुँचकर भोजन पचता है । उदर ।
विशेष—बहुत ही निम्न कोटि के जीवों में गले के नीचे का प्रायः
सारा भाग पेट का ही काम देता है कुछ जीव ऐसे भी होते
हैं जिनमें किसी प्रकार की पाचन क्रिया होती ही नहीं और
इसलिये उनमें पेट भी नहीं होता । पर उच्च कोटि के जीवों के शरीर के प्रायः मध्य भाग में थैले के आकार का एक
विशेष अंग होता है जिसमे पाचन रस बनता और भोजन
पचता है । मनुष्यों और चौपायों आदि में यह अंग पसलियों के नीचे और जननेंद्रिय से कुछ ऊपर तक रहता है । पाचक
रस बनाने और भोजन पचानेवाले सब अंग; जैसे, आमाशय,
पक्वाशय, जिगर, तिल्ली, गुरदे आदि इसी के अंतर्गत रहते
हैं । इसी के नीचे का भाग कटोरे के आकार का होता है
जिसमें आँतें और मुत्राश्य रहता है । कुछ जीवों जैसे पक्षियों
आदि, में एक के बदले दो पेट होता है ।
मुहा०—पेट आना = दस्त आना । (क्व०) । पेट का कुत्ता =
जो केवल भोजन के लालच से सब काम करता हो । केवल
पेट के लिये सब कुछ करनेवाला । पेट कटना = खाने को
कम मिलना । भूखे पेट रहना । उ०—पेट कटता देख जब रो
पीटकर । लोग पीटा ही करेंगे छातियाँ ।—चुभते० पृ० ३९ ।
पेट काटना = बचाने के लिये कम खाना । जाना बूझकर कम
खाना जिसमें कुछ बचत हो जाय । पेट का धंधा = (१)
भोजन बनाने का प्रबंध । रसोई बनाने का झंझट । (२)
रोजी रोजगार ढूँढ़ने का प्रबंध । जीविका का उपाय । (३)
हलका कामकाज । मेहनत मजदूरी । पेट का पानी न
पचना = रहा न जाना । रह न सकना । जैसे,—बिना सब
हाल कहे तुम्हारे पेट का पानी न पचेगा । पेट का पानी
हिलना = परिश्रम होना । मिहनत पड़ना । उ०— हिल गए
दिल भी न हिलना चाहिए । जायँ हिल क्यों पेट का पानी
