फिर यकृत को चला जाता है और पित्ताशय या पित्त
नामक उससे संलग्न एक विशेष अवयव में एकत्र होता
रहता है । वसा या स्नेहतत्व को पचाने के लिये पित्त का
उससे यथेष्ट मात्रा में मिलना अतीव आवश्यक है । यदि
इसकी कमी हो तो वह बिना पचे ही विष्ठा द्बारा शरीर
से बाहर हो जाता है । इसके अतिरिक्त इसके और भी
कई कार्य हैं, जैसे आमाशय से पक्वाश्य मे आए हुए आहार
रस की खटाई दूर करना, आँतों में भोजन को सड़ने न देना,
शरीर का तापमान स्थिर रखना, आदि । पित्त की कमी से
पाचन क्रिया बिगड़ जाती है और मंदग्नि, कब्ज अतिसार
आदि रोग होते हैं । इसी प्रकार इसकी वृद्धि से ज्वर, दाह,
वमन, प्यास मूर्छा और अनेक चर्मरोग होते हैं । जिसका
पित्त के बढ़ गया हो उसका रंग बिलकुल पीला हो जाता है ।
पित्त के बढे़ या बिगड़े हुए होने की दशा में वह अकसर वमन
द्बारा पेट से बाहर भी निकलता है ।
वैद्यक के अनुसार पित्त शरीर के स्वास्थ्य और रोग के कारण-
भूत तीन प्रधान तत्वों अथवा दोषों में से एक है । जिस
प्रकार रस का मल कफ है उसी प्रकार रक्त का मल पित्त
है जो यकृत या जिगर में उससे अलग किया जाता है ।
भावप्रकाश के अनुसार यह उष्ण, द्रव, आमरहित दशा
में पीला और आमसहित दशा में नीला, सारक , लघु,
सत्वगुणायुक्त, स्निग्ध, रस में कटु परंतु विपाक के
समय अम्ल हैं । अग्नि स्वभाववाला तो स्वयं अग्नि है ।
शरीर में जो कुछ उष्णता तत्व है उसका आधार यही है । इसी से अग्नि, उष्ण, तेजस् आदि पित्त के पर्याय हैं ।
इसमें एक प्रकार की दुर्गंधि भी आती है । शरीर में
इसके पाँच स्थान हैं जिनमें यह अलग अलग पाँच
नामों से स्थिर रहकर पाँच प्रकार के कार्य करता है ।
