१. ईश्वर के समान सन्मार्ग का विरोध

खाने के लिये कहा जिसका ईश्वर ने निषेध किया था । इस
अपराध पर आदम और हौवा स्वर्ग से निकाल दिए गए और
इस पृथ्वी पर आए । इन्हीं से यह मनुष्यसृष्टि चली । ऐसा
लिखा है कि शैतान भी पहले ईश्वर या खुदा का एक फरिश्ता
(पारिषद) था । जब ईश्वर ने आदम या मनुष्य उत्पन्न किया
तब वह ईर्ष्यावश ईश्वर से विद्रीही हो गया और उसकी सृष्टि
में उत्पात करने लगा । ईश्वर ने उसे स्वर्ग से निकालकर नरक
में भेज दिया जहाँ का वह राजा हुआ । सत् और असत् इन दो
नित्य शक्तियों की भावना यहूदियों के पैगंबर मूसा को
खाल्दियों (बाबुलवालों) और पारसीकों आदि प्राचीत सभ्य
जातियों से मिली थी । जरतुश्त ने भी अवस्ता में अहुरमज्द
(सत् शक्ति) और अह्नमान (असत् शक्ति) दो शक्तियाँ
कही हैं ।
मुहा०—शैतान का कान में फूँकना = शैतान का बहकाना ।
शैतान का धक्का = दुवृत्ति । बुरी प्ररण । शैतान का बच्चा
= बहुत दुष्ट आदमा । शंतान की आँत = बहुत लंबी वस्तु ।
शैतान की खाला = बहुत दुष्ट या पाजी औरत । (गाली) ।
शैतान की सूरत = अघ रूप । राक्षस की आकृति का ।
२. दुष्ट देवयोनि । भूत । प्रेत ।
मुहा०—शैतान उतरना = (१) भूतप्रेतादि का आवेश शांत होना ।
(२) क्रोधावेश दूर होना । (३) शरारतीपन न रहना । शैतान
चढ़ना या लगना = (१) भूत प्रेत का आवेश होना । प्रेत का
भाव पड़ना । (२) क्रोधावेश से आगबबूला हो जाना । शैतान
का कान काटना = शैतान से भी बढ़ जाना । (सिर पर) शैतान
