अन्न जो सारे भारत में बोया जाता है ।
विशेष—यह प्रायः फागुन चैत में बोया जाता है और जेठ में तैयार
होता है । कहीं कही इसकी बोआई-सावन में होती है
और भादोंतक यह काट लिया जाता है । यह बरसाती अन्न है ।
इसके विषय में यह कहावत पूर्वी जिलों में प्रसिद्ध है कि 'साँवाँ'
साठी साठ दिना । देव बरीस रात दिना । यह अन्न बहुत ही
सुपाच्य और बलवर्धक माना जाता है और प्रायः चावल की
भाँति उबालकर खाया जाता है । कहीं कहीं रोटी के लिये
इसका आटा भी तैयार किया जाता है । इसकी हरी पत्तियाँ
और डंठल पशुओं के लिये चारे की भाँति काम में आते हैं,
और पंजाब में कहीं कहीं केवल चारे के लिये भी इसकी खेती
होती है । अनुमान है कि यह मिस्र या अरब से इस देश में
आया है ।
