एक प्रकार का
रेशेदार खनिज पदार्थ जो ज्वालामुखी पर्वतों से निकलता है ।
विशेष—इसका रंग सफेद या हरा होता है और इसमें रेशम की
सी चमक होती है । इसका विशेष गुण यह है कि यह जल्दी
जल्दी जलता नहीं, इसी लिये गैस के भट्ठे बनाने में इसका बहुत
उपयोग होता है । आग से न जलनेवाले कपड़े तैयार करने में
भी यह काम में लाया जाता है । गरमी ओर बिजली का
प्रवेश इसमें बहुत कम होता है; इसी से यह बिजली के तार
आदि लपेटने में भी काम आता है । इंजिनो के जोड़ इसी से
भरे या बंद दिए जाते हैं । यह कारसिका, स्काँटलैड, कनाडा,
इटली आदि देशों में अधिक मिलता है ।
