१. औषध और मसाले आदि में
प्रयुक्त होनेवाला पाँच छह फूट ऊँचा एक पौधा और उसके फल
जिसकी खेती भारत में सर्वत्र होती है ।
विशेष—इस पौधे की पत्तियाँ सोए की पत्तियों के समान ही
बहुत बारीक और फूल सोए के समान ही कुछ पीले होते है ।
फूल लंबे सींकों में गुच्छों के रुप में लगते हैं । फल जीरे के
समान पर कुछ बड़े और पीले रंग के होते हैं । कार्तिक महीने
में इसके बीज बो दिए जाते हैं और पाँच सात दिन में
ही अंकुरित हो जाते हैं । माघ में फूल और फागुन में फल लग
जाते हैं । फागुन के अंत या चैत के पहले पखवाड़े तक, फलों के पकने पर मंजरी काटकर धूप में सुखा और पीटकर बीज
अलग कर लेते हैं । यही बीज सौँफ कहलाने हैं । सौँफ स्वाद
में तेजी लिए मीठी होती है । औषध के अतिरिक्त मसाले में
भी इसका व्यवहार करते हैं । इसका अर्क और तेल भी निकाला
जाता है जो औषध और सुगंधि के काम में आता है । वैद्यक
में यह चरपरी, कडुवी, मधुर, गर्भदायक, विरेचक, वीर्यजनक,
अग्निदीपक, तथा वात, ज्वर, दाह, तृष्णा, व्रण, अतिसार,
आम तथा नेत्ररोग को दूर करनेवाली मानी गई है । इसका अर्क
शीतल, रुचिकर, चरपरा, अग्निदीपक, पाचक, मधुर तथा तृषा,
वमन, पित और दाह का शमन करनेवाला कहा गया है ।

२. सौँफ की तरह का एक प्रकार का जंगली पौधा जो कश्मीर
में अधिकता से पाया जाता है ।
विशेष—इस पौधे की पत्तियाँ और फूल सौँफ के समान ही होते है । फल झुमकों में चौथाई से तीन चौथाई इंच तक के घेरे
में होते हैं । बीज गोल और कुछ चिपटे से होते हैं । हकीम
लोग इसका व्यवहार करते हैं । इसे बड़ी सौँफ, मौरी, मेउड़ी
या मौड़ी भी कहते हैं ।
