१. एक प्रकार का
ऊँचा बृक्ष जिसकी छाल, बीज और फल औषधि के काम
आते है ।
विशेष— यह वृक्ष भारत और लंका में सर्वत्र होता है । इसकी छाल
चौथाई इंच तक मोटी, हरापन लिए पीले रंग की, चिकनी,
हलकी और मुलायम होती है । काटने से इसमें से हरा रस
निकलता है । लकड़ी पीलापन लिए सफेद रंग की हलकी और
खोखली होती है तथा जलाने के सिवा और किसी काम में नहीं
आती । पेड़ की टहनियों पर तीन से पाँच फुट तक लंबी झुकी
हुई सींकें होती हैं जो भीतर से पीली होती हैं । प्रत्येक प्रधान
सींक पर पांच पांच गांठें होती हैं और उन गाँठों के दोनों और
एक एक और सींक होती है । पहली सींक की चार गाँठे सींकों
सहित क्रम क्रम से छोटी रहती हैं । इनमें पहली गाँठ पर तीन
जोड़े पत्ते, दूसरी और तीसरी गाँठ पर एक एक जोड़ा और
चौथी गांठ पर तीन पत्ते लगे रहते है । दूसरी और तीसरी सींकों
पर भी इसी क्रम से पत्ते रहते हैं । चौथी गाँठवाली सींक पर
पाँच पाँच पत्ते (दो जोड़े और एक छोर पर) होते हैं । पाँचवीं
पर तीन पत्ते (एक जोड़ा और एक छोर पर) होते हैं । इसी
प्रकार अंत में तीन पत्ते होते हैं । पत्ते करंज के पत्ते के समान
२ । । से ४ । । इंच तक चौड़े, लंबोतरे और कुछ नुकीले होते हैं ।
फूल १-२ फुट लंबी डंडी पर २ । ।-३ इंच लंबोतरे और सिल-
सिलेवार आते हैं । फूलों के भीतर का रंग पीलापन लिए लाल
और बाहर का रंग नीलापन लिए लाल होता है । फूलों में पाँच
पंखड़ियाँ और भीतर पीले रंग के पाँच केसर होते हैं । फूल
बहुधा गिर जाया करते हैं, इसलिये जितने फूल आते हैं, उतनी
फलियाँ नहीं लगतीं । फलियाँ २-२ । । फुट लंबी और ३-४ इंच
चौड़ी, चिपटी तथा तलबार की तरह कुछ मुड़ी हुई टेढ़ी नोकवाली होती है । इनके अंदर भोजपत्र के समान तहदार पत्ते सचे
रहते हैं और इन पत्तों के बीच में छोटे, गोल और हलके बीज
होते हैं । कलियाँ और कोमल फलियाँ प्रायः कच्ची ही गिर
जाया करती है । कार्तिक और अगहन के आरंभ तक इसके वृक्ष
पर फूल फल आते रहते हैं और शीतकाल के अंत और वसंत
ऋतु में फलियाँ पककर गिर जाती हैं और बीज हवा में उड़
जाते हैं । इन बीजों के गिरने से वर्षा ऋतु में पौधे उत्पन्न होते हैं ।
वैद्यक के अनुसार यह कसैला, कडुवा, चरपरा, शीतल, रुक्ष, मल-
रोधक, बलकारी, वीर्यवर्धक, जठराग्नि को दीपन करनेवाला
तथा वात, पित्त, कफ, त्रिदोष, ज्वर, सनिपात, अरुचि, आम-
वात, कृमि रोग, वमन, खाँसी, अतिसार, तृषा, कोढ़, श्वास
और वस्ति रोग का नाश करनेवाला है । इसकी छाल, फल
और बीज औषध के काम में आते हैं, पर छाल का ही अधिक
उपयोग होता है । इसका कच्चा फल कसैला, मधुर, हलका,
हृदय और कंठ की हितकारी, रुचिकर, पाचक, अग्निदीपक,
गरम, कटु, क्षार तथा वात, गुल्म, कफ और बवासीर तथा
कृमिरोग का नाश करनेवाला है ।

२. इसी वृक्ष का एक और भेद जो संयुक्त प्रेदेश (उत्तर प्रदेश),
पश्चिमोत्तर प्रदेश, बंबई, कर्नाटक, कारमंडल के किनारे तथा
बिहार में अधिकता से होता है और राजपूताने में भी कहीं कहीं
पाया जाता है ।
विशेष— यह पेड़ ६० से ८० फुट तक ऊँचा होता है और पत्तेवाली
सींक प्रायः ८इंच से १ फुट तक लंबी होती है, और कहीं कहीं
सींकों की लंबाई २-३ फुट तक होती है । सींकों पर आउ से
चौदह जोड़े समर्वती पत्ते होते हैं । इसके फूल बड़े और कुछ
पीले होते हैं । फलियां तांबे के रंग की, दी इंच लंबी तथा चौथाई
इंच चौड़ी, गोल, दोनों ओर नुकीली और जड़ की ओर ऐंठी सी
रहती हैं । पेड़ की छाल सफेद रंग की होती है और गुण भी
सोनापाठा— '१' के समान ही है ।
