पौधा जिसका कंद दवा के काम में आता है ।
विशेष—यह पश्चिमी हिमालय के समशीतोष्ण प्रदेशों में पहाड़ों की ढाल पर घासों के बीच उगता है और एक बालिश्त ऊँचा
होता है । फारस में भी यह बहुत होता है । इसमें बहुत कम
पत्ते होते हैं और प्रायः फूलों के साथ निकलते हैं । फूल लंबे
होते हैं और सीकों में लगते हैं । इसकी जड़ में लहसुन के
समान, पर उससे बड़ा कंद होता है जो कड़वा और मीठा दो
प्रकार का होता है । कड़वे को 'सूरंजान तल्ख' और मीठे को
'सूरंजान शीरीं' कहते हैं । मोटा कंद फारस से आता है और
खाने की दवा में काम आता है । कड़वा कंद केवल तेल आदि
में मिलाकर मालिश के काम आता है । इसके बीज विषैले होते
है; इससे बड़ी सावधानी से थोड़ी मात्रा में दिए जाते हैं ।
यूनानी चिकित्सा के अनुसार सूरंजान रूखा, रुचिकर तथा
वात, कफ, पांडुरोग, प्लीहा, संधिवात आदि को दूर करनेवाला
माना जाता है ।
