पर चढ़कर सिंहल के राजा ने प्रसिद्ध बोधिद्रुम को लेकर
स्वदेश की ओर प्रस्थान किया था ओर महाराज अशोक ने
समुद्रतट पर खडे़ होकर उसके लिये आँसू बहाए थे । ईसा की पाँचवीं शताब्दी में चीनी यात्री फहियान बौद्ध ग्रंथों की
नकल आदि लेकर ताम्रलिप्त ही से जहाज पर बैठ सिंहल
गया था ।
रामायण में ताम्रालिप्त का कोई उल्लेख नहीं है, पर महाभारत
में कई स्थानों पर है । वहाँ के निवासी ताम्रालिप्तक भारतयुद्ध
में दुर्योधन की ओर से लड़े थे । पर उनकी गिनती म्लेच्छ
जातियों के साथ हुई है । यथा—शकाः किराता दरदा बर्बरा
ताम्रलिप्तकाः । अन्ये च बहवो म्लेच्छा विविधायुधपाणयः ।
