सांख्य के अनुसार पंचभूतों का अविशेष
मूल । पंचभूतों का आदि, अमिश्र और सूक्ष्म रूप । ये संख्या
में पाँच हैं—शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, रस और गंध ।
विशेष—सांख्य में सृष्टि की उत्पत्ति का जो क्रम दिया है, उसके
अनुसार पहले प्रकृति से महत्तत्व की उत्पत्ति होती है ।
महत्तत्व से अहंकार और अहंकार से सोलह पदार्थों की
उत्पत्ति होती है । ये सोलह पदार्थ पाँच ज्ञानेंद्रियाँ, पाँच
कर्मेंद्रियाँ, एक मन और पाँच तन्मात्र हैं । इनमें भी पाँच
तन्मात्रों से पाँच महाभूत उत्पन्न होते हैं । अर्थात् शब्द तन्मात्र
से आकाश उत्पन्न होता है और आकाश का गुण शब्द है ।
शब्द और स्पर्श दो तन्मात्राओं से वायु उत्पन्न होती है और
शब्द तथा स्पर्श दोनों ही उसेक गुण हैं । शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप
और रस तन्मात्र के संयोग से जल उत्पन्न होता है और
जिसमें ये चारों गुण होते हैं । शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, रस और
गंध इन पाँचों तन्मात्रों के संयोग से पृथ्वी की उत्पत्ति होती
है जिसमें ये पाँचों गुण रहते हैं ।
