एक पेड़ जिसके फल खाए जाते हैं ।
विशेष—यह पेड़ मझोले आकार का होता है । इसके पत्ते फालसे के पत्तों से मिलते जुलते, पर कुछ लंबोतरे और मोटे दल के
होते हैं । किसी किसी के सिरे पर फाँकें भी कटी होती हैं ।
फूल मंजरी के रूप में लगते हैं जिनसे आगे चलकर की़ड़ों की
तरह लंबे लंबे फल होते हैं । इन फलों के ऊपर महीन दाने
होते हैं जिनपर रोइयाँ सी होती हैं । इनके कारण फलों की आकृति और भी कीड़ों की सी जान पड़ती है । फलों के भेद
से तूत कई प्रकार के होते हैं; किसी के फल छोटे और गोल,
किसी के लंबे किसी के हरे, किसी के लाल या काले होते हैं ।
मीठी जाति के बडे़ तूत को शहतूत कहते हैं । तूत योरप
और एशिया के अनेक भागों में होता है । भारतवर्ष में भी
तूत के पेड़ प्रायः सर्वत्र—काश्मीर से सिक्किम तक—पाए जाते
हैं । अनेक स्थानों में, विशेषतः पंजाब और काश्मीर में, तूत के
पेड़ों की पत्तियों पर रेशम के कीडे़ पाले जाते हैं । रेशम के
कीडे़ उनकी पत्तियाँ खाते हैं । तूत की लकडी़ भी वजनी और
मजबूत हौती है और खेती तथा सजावट के सामान, नाव
आदि बनाने के काम आती है । तूत शिशिर ऋतु में पत्ते
झाड़ता है और चैत तक फूलता है । इसके फल असाढ में पक
