फुट ), टाँगें और गरदन लंबी, कान और पूँछ छोटी, मुँह लंबा
और होठ लटके हुए होते हैं । ऊँट की लंबाई के कारण ही
कभी कभी लंबे आदमी को हँसी में ऊँट कह देते हैं । ऊँट दो
प्रकार का होता है — एक साधारण या अरबी और दूसरा
बगदादी । अरबी ऊँट की पीठ पर एक कूव होता है । ऊँट
भारी बोझ उठाकर सैकडों कोस की मंजिल तै करता है । यह
बिना दाना पानी के कई दिनों तक रह सकता है । मादा को
ऊँटनी या साँडनी कहते हैं । यह बहुत दूर तक बराबर एक
चाल चलने से प्रसिद्ध है । पुराने समय में इसी पर डाक
जाती थी । ऊँटनी एक बार में एक बच्चा देती है और
उसे दूध बहुत उतरता है । इसका दूध बहुत गाढा होता है
और उसमें से एक प्रकार की गंध आती है । कहते हैं, यदि
यह दूध देर तक रखा जाय तो उसमें कीडे पड जाते हैं ।
मुहा०—ऊँट किस करवट बैठता है = मामला किस प्रकार निबटता
अथवा क्या नतीजा निकलता है । ऊँट की कौन सी कल
सीधी = बेढंगों के काम में कहीं भी सलीके का न होना ।
ऊँट से आदमी होना = बेढंगे से सलीकेदार होना । उ०— जो
कहीं छह महाने हमारी जूतियाँ सीधी करो तो ऊँट से आदमी

और झुके झुके = छिप न सकनेवाली बात को छिपाने का
यत्न । ऊँटे के गले में बिल्ली बाँधना = ऐसा जोड़ बैठा देना
जिसका कोई मेल ही न हो । १. ऊँट का पाद होना =
बेफायदा बात । निरर्थक बात । उ०— करनी कौ रस मिटि
गयौ भयौ न आतम स्वाद । भई बनारसि की दशा जथा ऊँट
कौ पाद ।—अर्ध०, पृ० ५४ । ऊँट के मुँह में जीरा =
अधिक भोजन करनेवाले को स्वल्प सामग्री देना । बडी़
जरूरत के सामने स्वल्प सामग्री की व्यवस्था । ऊँट निगल
जायँ, दुम से हिचकियाँ = दावा बडी बडी बातों का और
व्यवहार में उलझन तनिक सी बात पर । २. ऊँट मक्के को
भागता है = स्वभाव आदत का शिकार होना । ऊँट बैल
का साथ = बेमेल साथ । अनमोल संगति । उ०— ऊँट बैल
का साथ हुआ है । कुत्ता पकडे हुए जुवा है ।—आराधना
