विशेष—यह पर्वत भारतवर्ष के मध्य में पूर्व से पश्चिम को फैला
हुआ है । आर्यावर्त देश की दक्षिण सीमा पर यह पर्वत है ।
विंध्य पर्वत के दक्षिण का प्रदेश दक्षिणापथ या दक्षिण
कहलाता है । इससे दो प्रधान नदियाँ नर्मदा और ताप्ती दक्षिण
और पश्चिम दिशा में बहकर अरब की खाड़ी में गिरती
हैं । इस पर्वत के पत्थर प्रायः बलुए और परतदार होते हैं ।
इसकी अनेक शाखा प्रशाखाएँ सतपुरा आदि नाम से विख्यात
हैं । पुराणानुसार यह सात कुलपर्वतों में है और मनु के अनुसार
मध्य देश की दक्षिणी सीमा है । महाभारत में कथा है कि
विध्य ने सूर्य से कहा कि मेरु के समान तुम हमारी प्रदक्षिणा
किया करो । जब सूर्य ने न माना; तब विंध्य ऊपर बढ़ने
लगा और यह आशंका हुई कि यह सूर्य का मार्ग ही रोक देगा ।
देवताओं ने अगस्त्य जी से प्रार्थना की । अगस्त्य उसके पाल गए
और उसने साष्टांग दंडवत किया । मुनि ने कहा कि जबतक मैं
न० लौटूं, तबतक इसी तरह पड़े रहना । इतना कहकर अगस्त्य जी
चले गए और फिर वापस नही आए । कहते है कि इसी
लिये यह पर्वत अब तक ज्यों का त्यों लेटा पड़ा है; और इसी
लिये इसका इतना अधिक विस्तार है ।
