देवताओं सहित इंद्रपुरी में भाग गए । पर अंत में विष्णु की
संमति से इंद्र ने दधीचि ऋषि से उनकी हड्डीयाँ माँगीं और
उन्हीं हड्डियों का वज्र बनाकर इससे लड़ना आरंभ किया ।
जब इंद्र नें इसके दोनों हाथ काट डाले, तब यह इंद्र को उनके
हाथी ऐरावत सहित निगल गया । तब इंद्र इसका पेट फाड़कर
बाहर निकले और इसका सिर काट डाला । देबीभागवत में
इसकी कथा विस्तार के साथ दी गई है । वेदों में भी 'वृत्र
असुर' का उल्लेख है; पर वहाँ जो कुछ वर्णन मिलता है,
उससे आलंकारिक रूप में मेघ और अँधकार आदि के संबंध में
ही 'वृत्र' शब्द आया हुआ जान पड़ता है ।
