Paramaribo
Paramaribo (Paramaribo Dutch pronunciation:) is the capital of the Suriname Republic. The population is 222,843 people. Paramaribo is situated at the Suriname estuary, approximately 15 km from the Atlantic Ocean. In the suburbs bauxite, gold, sugarcane, rice, coffee are produced and exported. In the city, we manufacture cement, rum (Borgoe), beer (Parbo). Prawns taken in the Caribbean are processed at Suriname Port and exported to Europe and Japan. Paramaribo was colonized by British in 1630. Paramaribo will become the capital of the new British colony in 1650. However, as a result of the British orchid war, in 1667 the Netherlands handed over the United States' New Amsterdam (now New York) to the UK and possessed Suriname.
