Gomeli
Gomel (or Gomel, Belarusian · Russian: Гомель, English: Homyel) is a city located in the southeast of Belarus. It is the capital city of Gomeli, the second largest city in Belarus, with a population of 480,000 (2005 survey). The area is 113 km². There is Gomeli Airport about 8 km away from the town. It is located near the border of Ukraine and is located on the right bank of the south river (Sož) which is an international river. The location of Gomery Town Hall is 52 degrees 44 minutes 16.70 seconds north latitude, 30 degrees 98 minutes 33.3 seconds east longitude. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located about 100 km downstream of the Soju River, and in the accident on April 26, 1986, Gomeli was also damaged. The exact date when Gomeli was established as a city is unknown, but it was mentioned since the first half of the 12th century and was officially accepted in 1142.
