Diopter (dioptre, symbol: D, Dptr) is a unit of refractive power of the lens (mainly for spectacles) and is defined as the reciprocal of the focal length expressed in meters. It was adopted at the conference of medicine officials in 1875. It is a compound word from Greek dia (pass through) and opteuo (see). As an example, the refractive index of a lens with a focal length of 0.5 m is 1 / 0.5 = 2 diopters, and when you wear glass with infinite distance, the distance to the object in focus is 0.5 m . The focal length is distinguished between positive and negative, and in the case of a lens, positive when the focal point is in the light traveling direction. In other words, the value becomes positive for a convex lens for hyperopia and presbyopia, and becomes negative for a concave lens for near vision. Normally, even in the case of a positive sign, add a sign and write it like "+2.0 Dptr".
