Arch dam

The arch dam is a dam whose horizontal cross section of the dam is arch curved so that most of the load such as hydraulic pressure is transferred to the rocks of both mountains by arch action. This dam is advantageous when the valley is small and the mountains are steep, but the bearing capacity, activity resistance, watertightness and durability of the foundation rock should be determined in comparison with other types of dams.

Arch dam The horizontal section type is a dam protruding upward in an arched shape. The pressure of the water in the dam acts on the curved surface of the arch and is transmitted to both sides by the compressive force. Therefore, the wall can be made of thin wall of concrete, but a solid rock wall is needed for the installation part of both sides. Also, since the arch action is weakened by the wide width of the river, it is suitable for narrow valleys where the ratio of the river width of the dam floor to the height of the dam is less than 3 times.
