The Republic of Ireland, abbreviated name Ireland is an island nation in the northwest of Britain in Europe and occupies most of the island of Ireland. It is bordered by Northern Ireland, the territory of the UK, northeast of the island, bordered by the Irish Sea to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It has a population of about 4 million and is a member of the European Union, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the United Nations. It has adopted a cabinet system of members. In 2005, the Economist survey found that the quality of life is the highest in the world, with nominal GDP per capita of $ 47,000 in 2011 and seventh in the world for human development. However, actual wages are not high, and the starting salary of college graduates is about 24,000 euros as of 2010, which is the lowest in Western Europe and 75% of the UK's neighboring countries. Ireland has legalized same-sex marriage in 2015 through a referendum on May 23.
