Nikolsky sign, one of the symptoms of SSS, is caused by this toxin that simply removes the epidermis by lightly pushing the affected part, which is not yet deprived, to the tip of the finger. The toxin activity is measured as the removal of the back skin after a certain period of time when the toxin is administered into the blood or peritoneal cavity of the newborn mouse.
