Since the cartilage of the residual joint surface is necrotic or denatured, it may be resected beforehand. 관절이단술 관절부에서 중추측의 관절면을 남기고 절단하는 것이다. 절단술을 요하는 경우는 악성종양, 중도손상, 괴사, 가스괴저 등 이다. 견관절, 고관절, 또는 지지(指趾)의 소관절에서 자주 이루어지고 술관절, 족관절이나 주관절(肘關節) 등에서는 중추측에서의 절단이 이루어진다. 수관절은 회내 회외 운동에 유리하기 때문에 관절단술이 이루어진다. 잔존관절면의 연골은 괴사 또는 변성섬유화하므로 미리 절제 하는 것도 있다.
