Thymoma is asymptomatic and may be found incidentally on X-rays, but may also cause symptoms such as sternal pain, relief, dyspnea, and oppression of the arteries, which are not evident. 흉선종대 흉선은 연령과 함께 크기가 변화하고 성장기에 가장크게 12~13세에서 30~40g가 된뒤 퇴축한다. 소아의 흉선비대는 흉선종에 의한 것보다도 흉선에 발생하는 기형종에 따른 경우가 많다. 그러나 병적인 흉선비대의 가장 많은 원인은 백혈병, 림프육종, 호지킨병등 성인의 경우 근무력증과 합병하거나 이에 선행한다. 흉선종은 무증상이고 X-선사진으로 우연히 발견되는 수도 있는가 하면 뚜렷하지 않은 후흉골의 통증, 해소, 호흡곤란, 상대동맥의 압박과 같은 증상의 원인이 되는 경우도 있다.
