Ilaquio
Iraklio is the largest city on the Greek island of Crete and the capital city of Crete. It is also the fourth largest city in Greece. The name of this city is Heraclion, also written in ancient Greek and Katarabu. For hundreds of years the city was called the Kandia, a Venetian notation borrowed from the former Greek name "Kan Daks" or "Kandakas", which is derived from the Arabic rabḍ al-ḫandaq. Candia, the English word for Candia, is a word from the French language that spans the entire city of Cana diana and Crete. During the Ottoman period, the city was called "Kandy", and it was used as "Castro" in the local area and "Castroño" as the locals. Iraklio is the prefectural capital of Iraklio and is home to the Iraklio International Airport, named after Nikos Kazanzanikis. Nearby is the Knossos Site, recovered and restored by Arthur Evans.
