Alexander는 정동갈등의 종류에 따라서 나타나는 자율신경반응은 거의 일정하고 거기에 따라서 기관선택이 이루어진다고 하는 가설이다. 공격적 욕구가 방해를 받으면 교감신경계의 긴장이 지속되어 편두통ㆍ고혈압ㆍ협심증 등이 발현하고 한편 의존이나 보호의 욕구가 충족되지 않으면 부교감신경계의 긴장이 지속해 소화성 궤양, 과민성 대장, 기관지천식 등이 나타난다고 한다.
