Lignin
Lignin means a fat-soluble phenol polymer among various constituents constituting the woody part of coniferous trees and broad-leaved trees. It comes from the Latin word "lignum". Since the discovery of Annetm Payen for the first time in the early 19th century, many basic researches have been carried out by Erdman, Adler and Freudenberg on the chemical structure and characterization of lignin. Recently, as the importance of biomass as a raw material for bioenergy has been emphasized, much attention has been paid to studies of controlling the content of lignin in biomass by introducing the characteristics of enzymes involved in lignin biosynthesis and molecular biology techniques. Depending on the presence or absence of lignin, the plant may be separated from the grass.
