Monrovia
Monrovia is the capital of Liberia. Located on the Atlantic coast of the megalopolis, it is located in the most populous state of Montserrat in Liberia. According to the 2008 census, the city has a population of 1,010,970, accounting for 29% of the total population of Liberia and the most populous city in the country. Founded in 1822, Monrovia was named after US President James Monroe. The city's economy is dominated by its ports and government offices. The Monrovia harbor was greatly expanded by the US military during World War II and the main exports were latex and iron ore. Cement, refined petroleum, foodstuffs, bricks and tiles, furniture, and chemicals are manufactured locally. It is located near the confluence of the Meju and St. Paul rivers, and has facilities to store and repair boats.
