Approximately 90 species are known in the world, mainly in Eurasia, Africa, and North America. The subfamily has sometimes been treated as a group of Nymphalinae, but the group has remained largely unchanged in its taxonomic position. In the Korean peninsula, 11 genera of 7 genera are known. Among them, lightning colored butterfly, autumnal butterfly, chestnut butterfly, red butterfly, yellow butterfly, windshield butterfly, red spot butterfly, royal butterfly, and king butterfly are approved species for export. 오색나비아과 세계에 약 90종이 알려졌으며, 대부분 유라시아, 아프리카, 북아메리카에 분포한다. 본 아과는 때때로 네발나비아과(Nymphalinae)의 한 그룹으로 취급되기도 했으나, 전체적으로 보면 분류학적 위치가 큰 변동 없이 유지되어온 그룹이다. 한반도에서는 7속 11종이 알려졌으며, 이 중 번개오색나비, 오색나비, 밤오색나비, 수노랑나비, 유리창나비, 홍점나비, 왕오색나비, 대왕나비는 국외반출승인대상생물종이다.
