Toluene is a thin, insoluble liquid, also called toluene, methylbenzene, phenylmethane. Aromatic hydrocarbons are used as solvents. The molecular formula of toluene is C6H5CH3, with one benzene ring attached to CH3. It is liquid at room temperature and has a clear and unique smell. Prepared using 2-chloroethane via Friedel-Craft alkylation. When dehydrated nitration reaction is carried out using concentrated sulfuric acid together with nitric acid, toluene is produced in trinitride.
