DICTIONARY

PRONUNCIATION OF BABA IN MALAY

baba

WHAT DOES BABA MEAN IN MALAY?

Baba and Madam

Baba and Madam are a group of Chinese descendants whose unique position is among the Chinese in the Straits Settlements, Malaya, especially in Melaka. However, some of them refuse to acknowledge that they are Chinese but instead claim that they are British and are proud of this position. Furthermore, they are holding new Chinese immigrants, and have their own club which does not allow Chinese immigrants to enter. They call themselves "Baba" or "Peranakan" because their culture, which is derived from the Chinese heritage, has elements of Malay cultural influence. Their cultural adaptation and resilience to the socio-cultural atmosphere in their past environment, which is through intermarriage between the Chinese and the Malays, is a major cause of why the next generations called them "Baba". In terms of affection, most of them still retain traditional Chinese and Buddhist religions, but many have embraced other religions like Christians who are very popular among adolescents.
