Habib's name prefix among Arabs and Indonesians is also used as a special call to the descendants of Prophet Muhammad through Fatimah az-Zahra and Ali bin Abi Thalib. Habib who came to Indonesia was the majority of his descendants, Hussein bin Ali. It is estimated that in Indonesia there are 1.2 million surviving people entitled to this term. In Indonesia, habib all have ancestors originating from Yemen, especially Hadramaut. Based on the record of the organization that recorded the genealogy of these habib, Ar-Rabithah, there are about 20 million people worldwide who can hold this title from 114 clans. Only male descendants are entitled to the title of habib. In its development, especially among Indonesian Muslim societies, this title is not only held by the da'i from Yemen alone, as citizens have honored them as their leaders regardless of the origin of the offspring because the reason for being a pious is not caused by his origins.

Awalan nama Habib di kalangan orang Arab-Indonesia dan juga Malaysia digunakan sebagai panggilan/gelaran khusus terhadap keturunan Nabi Muhammad melalui Fatimah az-Zahra dan Ali bin Abi Thalib. Habib yang datang ke Indonesia majoritinya adalah keturunan saidina Hussein bin Ali. Diperkirakan di Indonesia terdapat sebanyak 1.2 juta orang yang masih hidup yang berhak menyandang sebutan ini. Di Indonesia, habib semuanya memiliki moyang yang berasal dari Yaman, khususnya Hadramaut. Berdasarkan catatan pertubuhan yang melakukan pencatatan salasilah para habib ini, Ar-Rabithah, ada sekitar 20 juta orang di seluruh dunia yang dapat menyandang gelar ini dari 114 marga. Hanya keturunan laki-laki saja yang berhak menyandang gelar habib. Dalam perkembangannya, khususnya di kalangan masyarakat muslim Indonesia, gelar ini tidak hanya disandang oleh para da'i dari Yaman saja, kerana warga telah memuliakan mereka sebagai pemimpin mereka tanpa melihat asal-usul keturunan dengan alasan seorang menjadi alim tidak diakibatkan oleh asal keturunannya.
