Insulin is a type of polypeptide hormone produced by pancreatic glands. Cells that produce insulin hormones in the pancreas gland are known as beta cells, a cell in a cell grouping called Langerhans's peppermint. The main function of insulin is to control the balance of glucose levels in the blood and to increase the intake of glucose by body cells. The body's failure to produce insulin, or insufficient amount of insulin, will cause glucose to be absorbed and used by the body cells. Thus glucose increases in the blood causes diabetes mellitus, also known as diabetes mellitus.

Insulin merupakan sejenis hormon jenis polipeptida yang dihasilkan oleh kelenjar pankreas. Sel yang menghasilkan hormon insulin dalam kelenjar pankreas dikenali sebagai sel beta, iaitu sejenis sel yang terdapat dalam kelompokan sel yang digelar pepulau Langerhans dalam pankreas. Fungsi utama insulin ialah pengawalan keseimbangan tahap glukosa dalam darah dan bertindak meningkatkan pengambilan glukosa oleh sel badan. Kegagalan badan untuk menghasilkan insulin, atau jumlah insulin yang tidak mencukupi akan menyebabkan glukos tidak dapat masuk ke dalam dan digunakan oleh sel-sel badan.Dengan demikian glukos meningkat di dalam darah menyebabkan berlakunya penyakit kencing manis juga dikenal sebagai diabetes melitus.
