Itrium

It is a chemical element with Y symbol and atomic number 39. Y is a shiny metal transition metal resembling lantanoid chemically and has been classified as rare earth elements according to history. It is said to be often found to be associated with lantanoid in rare earth minerals and has never been found anywhere as a free element. Its single stable isotope, 89Y is also an isotope that occurs naturally. In 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius discovered new minerals near Ytterby in Sweden and named it "ytterbite" in conjunction with his country name. Johan Gadolin discovered the itrium oxide in the Arrhenius sample in 1789 and Anders Gustaf Ekeberg named his new oxide, "yttria". The itrium element was first isolated in 1828 by Friedrich Wöhler. Its main use is to make phosphorus like red color used in television and LED cathode ray tube displays. Other uses include electrodes, electrolytes, electron filters, lasers and super-fluid.

Y ialah logam peralihan keperakan yang berkilat menyerupai lantanoid secara kimia dan pernah dikelaskan sebagai unsur nadir bumi menurut sejarah. Itrium boleh dikatakan sering kali ditemui tergabung dengan lantanoid dalam galian nadir bumi dan belum pernah dijumpai di mana-mana sebagai unsur bebas. Isotop stabil tunggalnya, 89Y juga merupakan isotop yang terjadi secara semula jadi. Pada tahun 1787, Carl Axel Arrhenius menemui galian baharu berdekatan Ytterby di Sweden dan menamakannya sebagai "ytterbite" sempena nama desanya. Johan Gadolin menjumpai oksida itrium di dalam sampel Arrhenius pada tahun 1789 dan Anders Gustaf Ekeberg menamakan oksida baharunya, "yttria". Kegunaan lain termasuklah penghasilan elektrod, elektrolit, penapis elektron, laser dan superpengalir.
