Matter is anything that has mass and space. All materials whether solids, liquids or gases on earth are matter. The particle theory of matter states that matter consists of discrete fine particles. The particles that build the matter may be: ▪ atomic molecules ▪ The ionic matter can also be classified into two parts: ▪ element ▪ compounds ▪ The finer matter mix is estimated to be less than 10-9m in diameter. Therefore, we can not see the matter particles nor use the light microscope. The matter exists in several physical states. 4 of the physical states are: ▪ gases ▪ liquids ▪ solid ▪ plasma The matter can be transformed from a physical state to another physical condition when something is heated or cooled in connection with temperature changes. During the change of state of matter, energy transfer will occur ie whether heat energy is absorbed or released.
