The month of Safar is the second month according to the prediction of the Islamic calendar based on Qamariah year. Safar means empty. Named Safar because in this month the Arabs often left their homes empty due to attacks and demanded retaliation against their enemies. Among the important events that occurred in the history of Islam this month were the Battle of Al-Abwa in the second year of Hijrah, Zi-Amin War, the third year Hijrah and the Battle of Ar-Raji in the fourth Hijrah year. In this month there are also Muslims who take the opportunity to do the heretics and superstitions that are in conflict with the Islamic law. This is because according to the hereditary beliefs of some ignorant Muslims, the month of Safar is the month of the fall and disaster especially on Wednesday last week. That is why each year they will practice nonsense as a way of rejecting their trust. Among the practices that have emerged in the Malay world is the ceremony of the Safar Bath Festival. This practice became popular a long time ago.

Bulan Safar adalah bulan kedua mengikut perkiraan kalendar Islam yang berdasarkan tahun Qamariah. Safar ertinya kosong. Dinamakan Safar kerana dalam bulan ini orang-orang Arab sering meninggalkan rumah mereka menjadi kosong kerana melakukan serangan dan menuntut pembalasan ke atas musuh-musuh mereka. Antara peristiwa-peristiwa penting yang berlaku dalam sejarah Islam pada bulan ini ialah Peperangan Al-Abwa pada tahun kedua Hijrah, Peperangan Zi-Amin, tahun ketiga Hijrah dan Peperangan Ar-Raji pada tahun keempat Hijrah. Di dalam bulan ini juga ada di kalangan umat Islam mengambil kesempatan melakukan perkara-perkara bidaah dan khurafat yang bertentangan dengan syariat Islam. Ini kerana menurut kepercayaan turun-temurun sesetengah orang Islam yang jahil, bulan Safar ini merupakan bulan turunnya bala bencana dan mala- petaka khususnya pada hari Rabu minggu terakhir. Oleh sebab itu setiap tahun mereka akan melakukan amalan-amalan karut sebagai cara untuk menolak bala yang dipercayai mereka itu. Antara amalan khurafat yang pernah muncul di alam Melayu ialah upacara Pesta Mandi Safar. Amalan ini menjadi popular suatu waktu dahulu.
