Atom - the basic substance of matter. It consists of a small positively charged high density nucleus and a surrounding electron cloud with a negative electrical charge. The word atom comes from Greek ἄτομος - átomos, meaning something that can not be cut or divided. The idea of ​​the existence of indivisible components of matter has already appeared in the writings of ancient Indian and Greek philosophers. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries chemists confirmed these assumptions, identifying chemical elements, and showing that they react with each other in strictly defined proportions. In the nineteenth century, Brown's motions were discovered, an indirect proof of the graininess of matter. In the early twentieth century, physicists examined the internal structure of atoms, showing that they are divisible. Theories of quantum mechanics allowed to create mathematical models of the interior of an atom. Atoms have a size of 10-10 m and a mass of 10-26 kg. They can be observed by scanning tunneling microscope. More than 99.9% of the mass of the atom is contained in its nucleus.

Atom – podstawowy składnik materii. Składa się z małego dodatnio naładowanego jądra o dużej gęstości i otaczającej go chmury elektronowej o ujemnym ładunku elektrycznym. Słowo atom pochodzi z greckiego ἄτομος – átomos, oznaczającego coś, czego nie da się przeciąć ani podzielić. Idea istnienia niepodzielnych składników materii pojawiła się już w pismach starożytnych filozofów indyjskich i greckich. W XVII i XVIII wieku chemicy potwierdzili te przypuszczenia, identyfikując pierwiastki chemiczne i pokazując, że reagują one ze sobą w ściśle określonych proporcjach. W XIX wieku odkryto ruchy Browna, będące pośrednim dowodem ziarnistości materii. Na początku XX wieku fizycy zbadali wewnętrzną strukturę atomów, pokazując tym samym, że są one podzielne. Teorie mechaniki kwantowej pozwoliły stworzyć matematyczne modele wnętrza atomu. Atomy mają rozmiary rzędu 10−10 m i masę rzędu 10−26 kg. Można je obserwować przez skaningowy mikroskop tunelowy. Ponad 99,9% masy atomu jest zawarte w jego jądrze.
