Azeka

Azeka is a biblical city located in the north-eastern part of Judah on the route from the coast to the Judean Highlands. In the vicinity of Azeka there was a road to Bethlehem in the valley of Bethlehem. The city is identified with the contemporary Tell Zakarie. Archaeological excavations at Tell Zakarie began at the end of the 19th century. Between 1898 and 1899, the expedition led by Frederick Jones Bliss and Robert Alexander Stewart Macalister of the Palestinian Research Foundation discovered remains of a fortified town from the 10th century BC. The city was an element of the fortification of the Judy line. It was surrounded by a wall and fortified by towers. In written sources the city was mentioned in the fourth letter from Lakish, which proves that it was of strategic importance to Judah. The loss of the position after its capture by the Babylonians is evidenced by few finds from the Persian and Hellenistic periods. During the reign of Saul at the end of the eleventh century p.n.e. According to 1 Samuel, near Azeka in the direction of Soko, the Philistines gathered their forces to begin a war with Israel.

Miasto jest utożsamiane ze współczesnym Tell Zakarie. Wykopaliska archeologiczne na Tell Zakarie rozpoczęły się pod koniec XIX wieku. W latach 1898–1899 ekspedycja pod kierunkiem Fredericka Jonesa Blissa i Roberta Alexandra Stewarta Macalistera z ramienia Palestyńskiej Fundacji Badawczej odkryła pozostałości po obwarowanym mieście z X wieku p.n.e. Miasto stanowiło element ufortyfikowania linii granicznej Judy. Było otoczone murem i umocnione wieżami. W źródłach pisanych miasto zostało wzmiankowane w czwartym liście z Lakisz, co dowodzi, że miało ważne znaczenie strategiczne dla Judy. O utracie pozycji po zdobyciu go przez Babilończyków świadczą nieliczne znaleziska z okresu perskiego i hellenistycznego. Za panowania Saula pod koniec XI wieku p.n.e. według 1 Księgi Samuela nieopodal Azeki w kierunku Soko Filistyni gromadzili swoje siły, aby rozpocząć wojnę z Izraelem.
