Cause célèbre - an expression used to describe court proceedings, whose course was closely followed by public opinion. The collection of such high court hearings is called pitawal, after the name of the French lawyer François Gayot de Pitaval, who in 1734 issued his choice of high- Causes célèbres et intéressantes. Cause célèbre – wyrażenie używane dla określenia procesów sądowych, których przebieg śledzony był pilnie przez opinię publiczną. Zbiór takich głośnych rozpraw sądowych nazywany jest pitawalem, od nazwiska francuskiego adwokata François Gayota de Pitavala, który w 1734 wydał swój wybór głośnych spraw pt. Causes célèbres et intéressantes.
