Epimery

Epimers - diastereoisomers differing in configuration at one and only one chiral center. In carbohydrate chemistry the term epimers is sometimes narrowed to diastereoisomeric pairs of aldoses having the opposite configuration at carbon 2. The epimers according to the general definition are eg: ▪ D-glucose / D-mannose and L-glucose / L-mannose. -galactose and L-glucose / L-galactose ▪ D-galactose / D-thalassemia and L-galactose / L-thalassemia ▪ D- mannose / D-thalassemia and L-mannose / L-thalassemia Normally used for carbohydrates. The reaction leading to a change in the absolute configuration at the carbon atoms leading to the conversion of one epimer to the other is called epimerization.

W chemii węglowodanów pojęcie epimerów bywa zawężane do pary diastereoizomerycznych aldoz o przeciwnej konfiguracji przy atomie węgla 2. Epimerami według definicji ogólnej są np. pary: ▪ D-glukoza/D-mannoza oraz L-glukoza/L-mannoza ▪ D-glukoza/D-galaktoza oraz L-glukoza/L-galaktoza ▪ D-galaktoza/D-taloza oraz L-galaktoza/L-taloza ▪ D-mannoza/D-taloza oraz L-mannoza/L-taloza Podkreślone pary są epimerami także według wąskiej definicji stosowanej zwykle dla węglowodanów.
