In accounting goodwill is the difference between the purchase price of another entity or its organized part and the fair value of the acquired net assets. If the acquisition price of an entity or its organized part is lower than the fair value of the acquired assets, the difference is negative goodwill. If the acquisition price of an entity or its organized part is higher than the fair value of the acquired net assets, the difference is a positive goodwill. Goodwill must be amortized on a straight-line basis over a period of no more than 5 years. In justified cases it may be extended to 20 years. W rachunkowości wartość firmy jest to różnica między ceną nabycia innej jednostki lub jej zorganizowanej części a wartością godziwą przejętych aktywów netto. Jeżeli cena nabycia jednostki lub jej zorganizowanej części jest niższa od wartości godziwej przejętych aktywów, to różnica stanowi ujemną wartość firmy. Jeżeli cena nabycia jednostki lub jej zorganizowanej części jest wyższa od wartości godziwej przejętych aktywów netto, to różnica stanowi dodatnią wartość firmy. Wartość firmy musi być amortyzowana metodą liniową przez okres nie dłuższy niż 5 lat. W uzasadnionych przypadkach może on zostać wydłużony do 20 lat. Gdy wartość firmy powstaje w wyniku przejęcia innego podmiotu na podstawie MSSF 3 to wówczas jest zakaz jej amortyzacji. Należy przeprowadzać test na utratę wartości firmy.
