halons

Halony

Halon - trade name of bromo, fluoro- and chloro-hydrocarbon compounds formerly used as extinguishing agents. The halon fire extinguishers, which break the combustion reaction by deactivating free radicals in the flame, are highly effective. Halons were designed to extinguish Class B and Class C fires. Due to their properties they were also used to extinguish fires of electronic, telecommunication and live electrical equipment. They were the most effective fire extinguishers of all known extinguishing agents. Owing to the high potential of ozone depletion under the Montreal Protocol, they are being phased out. They have properties similar to freons, just as they destroy the ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere. Another serious disadvantage of these compounds is their harmfulness to human health. The toxic effects of both halon vapors and the compounds produced by its decomposition at high temperatures are both toxic. For these reasons, it is almost impossible to use this extinguisher in the world today.
