Kongi

Congi is a family of Cuban drums originating from Africa. Unlike most African drums, kong is not made from hollow tree trunks, but, like barrels, from slats. In the kong design we can distinguish two main elements - already described body and tension, which consists of natural or synthetic leather, attached with a metal rim. The full set of kong is four drums. Usually playing on a solo or incorporating a "percussion" set, there are three. In orchestras or larger percussion compositions the roles are clearly divided and one, at most, two drums of any type are used. Technique for playing kong is not easy and requires a lot of exercise. They play with their hands, sometimes using a stick that is similar to that used on a drum kit. Congo are an integral part of traditional Cuban culture and music. They are used as often in clubs, in concerts and during religious performances. Nowadays, kongi can be heard in many musical genres, from jazz through rock and reggae, to contemporary serious music.

Kongi to rodzina bębnów kubańskich wywodzących się z Afryki. W odróżnieniu od większości afrykańskich bębnów kong nie robi się z wydrążonych pni drzew, lecz, na podobieństwo beczek, z listew. W konstrukcji kongi możemy wyróżnić dwa główne elementy – opisany już korpus oraz naciąg, na który składa się naturalna lub syntetyczna skóra, przymocowana metalową obręczą. Pełen zestaw kong to cztery bębny. Zazwyczaj grając na nich solo lub włączając do zestawu "przeszkadzajek" perkusyjnych, gra się na trzech. W orkiestrach lub większych składach perkusyjnych role są jasno podzielone i stosuje się jeden, najwyżej dwa bębny, dowolnego typu. Technika gry na kongach nie jest prosta i wymaga wielu ćwiczeń. Gra się na nich dłońmi, używając czasem pałeczki podobnej do tej używanej przy grze na zestawie perkusyjnym. Kongi są integralną częścią tradycyjnej kubańskiej kultury i muzyki. Są one używane równie często w klubach, na koncertach jak i w trakcie seansów religijnych. Obecnie kongi można usłyszeć w wielu gatunkach muzycznych, od jazzu poprzez rock i reggae, a także we współczesnej muzyce poważnej.
