Krapina

Krapina is a town in northern Croatia, administrative center of Krapina-Zagorje County. The town itself has 4647 inhabitants and the municipality is 12 950. Krapina lies in the Zagorje hills, at equal distance from Zagreb and Varaždin - about 55 km. Krapina has been known since 1193. She was eagerly elected to the seat of the castles and other estates by the rulers of Croatia and Hungary. In the nearby cave, the paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger discovered over 100,000 people. Fossils of about 70 Neanderthals probably belonging to one population. Today Krapina is famous for its Kajkavske pope festival, where the works are performed in the local dialect of the Croatian kajkawski language. The spa town of Krapinske Toplice is nearby.
