Lagos

Lagos

Lagos - the largest city and former capital of Nigeria, about 10 million inhabitants. The largest in Kinshasa and Cairo in Africa. Nigeria's capital until 1991, when the capital was moved to Abuja. Lagos, despite moving the capital to Abuja, remained the economic center of the country. Lagos is located on the coast of the Gulf of Lagos and on several islands. Initially, the village of Eko lay in the town. Its location on the Atlantic coast has made it a good place for contacts with Europeans. In the 15th century, the Portuguese arrived here, establishing the first commercial station, which they named Lagos, which was named after the city in southwestern Portugal. Trafficked with spices, ivory, and slaves. The town was taken over by the British in 1807 to stop the slave trade. It was incorporated into the Nigerian colony in 1900. In 1962, the only university in the city was founded. Lagos – największe miasto i dawna stolica Nigerii, około 10 mln mieszkańców. Największe obok Kinszasy i Kairu miasto w Afryce. Stolica Nigerii do 1991, kiedy stolicę przeniesiono do Abudży. Lagos, mimo przeniesienia stolicy do Abudży, pozostało gospodarczym centrum kraju. W XV wieku przybywający tu Portugalczycy utworzyli pierwszą stację handlową, którą nazwali Lagos, którą to nazwę nosiło miasto w południowo-zachodniej Portugalii. Handlowano przyprawami, kością słoniową i niewolnikami. Miasto zostało przejęte przez Brytyjczyków w 1807 w celu powstrzymania handlu niewolnikami. Zostało wcielone do kolonii Nigerii w 1900. W 1962 roku założono jedyny w mieście uniwersytet.
