Maputo is the capital of Mozambique, located in the southern part of the country and at the same time a separate province. Maputo is located on the western shore of the bay of the same name, at the mouth of the Tembe River. The bay is 95 km long and 30 m wide. At the south end of the bay is the mouth of Maputo River. Population: 1 149 666 Maputo is a port on the Indian Ocean. Modern urban port infrastructure focuses on the economic life of the city. The main export commodities passing through the port in Maputo are coal, cotton, sugar, chrome, sisal, copra and wood. The city produces cement, pottery, furniture, shoes, as well as rubber products. Maputo also has a large aluminum smelter facility. The town was founded at the end of the 18th century under the name Lourenço Marques, in honor of a Portuguese merchant who discovered the area in 1544. The dynamic development of the city dates back to 1895, when it was connected by a railway line to Pretoria in South Africa. The largest railway station in the city is Maputo. In 1907 Lourenço Marques became the capital of Portuguese East Africa.

Wokół nowoczesnej infrastruktury portowej skupia się życie gospodarcze miasta. Główne towary eksportowe przechodzące przez port w Maputo to węgiel, bawełna, cukier, chrom, sizal, kopra oraz drewno. W mieście wytwarzany jest cement, wyroby garncarskie, meble, buty, a także wyroby gumowe. W Maputo znajduje się również duży zakład wytopu aluminium. Miasto założone zostało pod koniec XVIII wieku pod nazwą Lourenço Marques, na cześć portugalskiego kupca, który odkrył te tereny w roku 1544. Dynamiczny rozwój miasta datuje się od 1895 roku, kiedy zostało połączone linią kolejową z Pretorią w Afryce Południowej. Największą stacją kolejową miasta jest Maputo. W 1907 roku Lourenço Marques zostało stolicą Portugalskiej Afryki Wschodniej.
